From Old Phone to Vintage Art: Crafting a Retro Phone Planter

Have you ever had a creative idea that you hesitated to bring to life because it involved destroying something nostalgic? That was my dilemma when I got the notion of turning a retro phone into a planter. I couldn't bear the thought of dismantling a vintage rotary phone, until a serendipitous visit to a thrift store in Grand Junction, Colorado changed everything. Join me on this journey as I transform a $5 find into a charming, vintage-inspired art piece.

The Thrift Store Discovery:

Every time I step into a thrift store, I make a beeline for the electronics section, hoping to stumble upon a vintage phone. My searches had been in vain, until that fateful day in Grand Junction when I found an old retro phone for just $5. What set this phone apart was that it had buttons instead of a rotary dial. Suddenly, I felt more at ease with the idea of transforming it into a planter. With my treasure in hand, I boarded a plane back to California, surprised that TSA didn't bat an eye at my unconventional carry-on.

The Dismantling Process:

My first task was to carefully disassemble the phone. I meticulously removed every screw, revealing the fascinating inner workings of the device. The sight of wires, circuit boards, and the bell used for the ringer left me in awe. It was like uncovering a piece of technological history.

Planning and Shopping:

Once the phone was emptied, I took measurements to determine the size of the foam I would need for the planter. I headed to the craft store, Michael's, and picked up the necessary supplies, including foam and fake succulents. My plan was to use larger succulents (around 2-3 inches) as well as smaller ones to fill any gaps in the design.

Assembling the Planter:

With my materials in hand, I began cutting the foam into chunks using a knife. While I could have made the foam look neater with sandpaper, I decided it wasn't necessary since it wouldn't be visible. My main concern was ensuring that the succulents would stay securely in place.

I reassembled the bottom of the phone, creating a stable base for the planter. Then, I carefully arranged the succulents in the foam. I didn't have a strict plan; I started with the larger succulents and filled in any spaces with the smaller ones.

The Final Result:

And just like that, my retro phone planter was complete. It transformed from an ordinary thrift store find into a charming and vintage-inspired art piece that added a touch of nostalgia to my home decor.

Sometimes, creative projects require a leap of faith and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. My journey from thrift store discovery to vintage art creation taught me that beautiful things can emerge when we let our imaginations run wild. So, next time you stumble upon a unique item in a thrift store, don't hesitate to turn it into something extraordinary, just like my retro phone planter.
